Re: HT1550-XLS FPP w/o Red Bettery
I just modified my HT1550s for FPP with any battery by cutting open 2 dead red batteries and removing the chip, then installing it inside the radios. There's more room in the VHF than the UHF, and you have to remove the chip RF choke to isolate it from the center terminal so battery status still wor...

Can't get a $10 volume control, have to buy $500 front panel assembly
Motorola's biggest policy screw up to date. This is worse than the 30 year long problem I went through with them over the PTT disc contacts that wouldn't give any sort of tactile feedback.

Speaker covers for CP200 handhelds
Apparently Motorola wants to obsolete this radio by discontinuing a little dinky part, the 35-86092Z04 felt speaker cover! Does anyone know of a source for a sheet of similar speaker covering that could be cut to size? I know I can still get the HT (Waris) series speaker covers, but who knows how lo...

Wrong direction. I need the QMA antenna cable to mini UHF adapter. Can't find it anywhere. Makes wattmetering installations impossible.

I can find MPL female-QMA male adapters for connecting to the radio end, but no MPL male - QMA female adapters for connecting to the coax end for wattmetering an installation.

I remember some of the Nextels were:
Toucan
Falcon
Marathon
Raven
Also, CM200 is a Marlin
Minitor V is a Terrapin
MT1500 was a Mako
PR400 was a Piranha
CP100 was a Rio
XPR4350 was a Morpheus
Some recent APX mobile is an Odyssey?

You wouldn't believe the counterfeit Waris housings I've seen. Thin gold plating on the flex contacts, press-fit (not molded-in) microphone screw-in parts, speakers shorting to the frame, factory reject LCDs, and so on.

I thought there were two versions, the Motrar 5 and the Motrar 20. I do remember that if you wanted anything higher than 5 on a portable, you had to go to the STX. And I just got a MTX8250 back from depot with the code name "Satria" referring to the front cover. Haven't seen that one before.

Re: Rubber Antenna Evaluations - SHOOT OUT
I once did a similar comparison on the MX mount antennas, and found that the short VHF HT750 antennas were a good dummy load (outperformed by a standard stubby 3" VHF by 3db!) and the new NAD6579 "gain" long ducky indeed has as much gain as one of those half-helical half-whip armpit p...

Rebuilding NNTN4503 red FPP HT1550 batteries
I've done two now, and it seems that the better way is to cut the label side panel just inside the edge on the panel's sides and bottom, then pry the batteries and plastic up and out. The cells were replaced with Eneloops or Duracell "pre-charged" rechargeables, which are above 2000 mAH an...

Anyone remember the Motrar? It was a Maxar 80 with a trunked logic board/synthesizer added - a real ugly Frankenradio. We used to call it the Mo-Toad. If you've never seen one, imagine a Maxar 80 with a huge beer belly.

Re: External Speaker Volume Pot
At our shop we use a 15 ohm pot across the speaker leads (1 and 15/16) and the speaker goes from 1 to the wiper of the pot. Side note: some speaker/pot combinations have enough room where you can drill a hole centered in front of the speaker and mount the pot there. The Micor/HSN9236 square plastic ...

Up until they discontinued it a few months ago, I'd use a 3905834K04 contact instead of the original one for a better "pop". I once suggested this to a Motorola engineer, and was told "we can't do it due to migration issues." The new part number is 3905834K06 with a little less p...

I've seen complaints about (and have experienced!) some poor quality HT1550 receive audio, and did a little experimenting.
