Whee! [AKA the Batboard $upported thread]

Post by jon »

Well this time the root partition of the disks bit it and got corrupted, so I ended up building a new OS. This should be much more better. :)

Happily, it looks like I was able to restore the board to where it was when it went down. Let Alex know if you have any trouble!

[Admin note:

READ this entire thread, and follow the directions in the thread to get the donation tag added to your name. PM's with how should I etc will go unanswered. Please READ through it. Thanks. ]

Thanks to a few people who took the time to help Jon out with some funding. I know he wants to buy a new server - I see no reason why we shouldn't help him.

Thanks so far to:

Seth (sglass)
Tim H (not sure what your board handle is)
Tricari
Gerbil
Alex
r0F (and he's unemployeed and HE STILL GAVE!)
Jaymz
Batdude

So far, he's up to $270.

If you want to keep helping - paypal to jon@snoopy.net - this is NOT the same as clicking on the paypal link on the first batboard page.

Thanks again to these people who helped get it started. As he gets more names, hopefully he'll forward them to me so that I can give credit to people who are helping out.

The board may be up and down for the next few hours as Jon slowly brings more things on line.

Jon has hosted this board for 2+ years without a single complaint, concern, or worry - he's just done it. I think we owe it to him.

[ i'm removing the donation link for now. i don't want people to be confused. i'm going to talk to Alex and we'll come up with a clear way to allow folks to donate for the "batboard $upporter" tag shortly -jon 05/05/2006 ]

Also, how were you guys able to send notes with your payment? I clicked the link, but I never saw a place to add a note.

Anyway...

Thank you to Jon, Alex, all the other mods and everybody else for making this board possible. You all do a great job and if there is anything else I can do please let me know.

Glad to see it is back.

I think I was starting to get DTs from lack of BatBoard. But as Alex and rof have stated. Please donate everyone... doesn't matter how much, if everyone gives just $5 it'll help Jon provide the best service to all of us radioheads here.

So Thank You Jon for your efforts with the server, Alex tells me there are congratulations in order as well.. So Congrats, good luck, and Thank you again.

I'm in for $20 as well. I work in the radio profession, but the board has provided me with information that I would not have had before. And a pleasant distraction from the repair queue. Money well spent.

Thanks

A friend of mine just bought a brand new Dell server for under $300. 1.8 GHz Celeron with some amount of disk storage and maybe 512mb RAM. I don't know what you're running now, nor what your requirements are, but if you started with something like this, and bought more RAM and a bigger hard drive, the cost is still quite reasonable. Seems like you probably have that much in donations already.

How much are you looking for, ultimately, to BUY exactly what you want, and enough to cover the forseeable future? I'd like to make what would be considered a substantial donation. PM me if you don't want to make this public.

WOW!

Post by jon »

Wow guys, what a response! Sorry I didn't chime in here sooner, but I've been busy pieceing things back together on the current server and spending time with my wife and baby girl over the weekend. :)

As of 12:42AM EST on 3/16/04 batboard users have donated $1,299.93!

(more, if you add in paypal's cut)

This is fantastic, and I really appreciate everyone chipping in! We should be able to build a pretty rockin' server and be able to keep spare disks, etc, handy in case problems arise.

This plus the fact that I should have 24/7 access to the cabinet starting sometime this week (cross your fingers) should keep any future downtime to a minimum.

Once I figure out what we're gonna build, I'll post here and let everyone know the details.

Thanks again for all of your contributions.

Post by chiefhal3 »

Hey, I really like this site and really appreciate that it is free. However, I recognize there is costs associated with running the site. Perhaps if you did something to identify members who contribute to the site then more folks would donate. Maybe a special symbol by there name or something like that. Maybe even a special forum just for contributing members.

This email confirms that you have paid perlguy9 (perlguy9@yahoo.com) $25.00 USD using PayPal.

Well, with the running total around $1200-1300 so far, you can go with a nice DL-380 with 1Ghz+ processors and a big fat RAID-5 (+ hot spare) SCSI3 array. Not new of course but, eBay is your friend. ;)

I run our primary servers (including the voip server) on DL-380's in this config. I've yanked drives out of the system in the middle of a fsck and the hardware raid just kept chugging right along. It lets me sleep better at night.

Just about everyone who has donated should have "Batboard Supporter" under your name.

So far (as of 3/18/04) 61 People have donated to Jon's server fund. Average donation was 33.19 (34.51 before paypal's cut).

There are maybe about 20 people who do not currently have "Batboard Supporter" under your name who also gave to the cause.

I found most of you by taking your email and comparing it to what's in the database. Some of you I know, some of you I don't. Some of you have paypal emails that don't match board emails. Let me know if this is the case so I can give you credit.

It's really amasing to see how much support this board has - thanks guys (and gals!!).
