Converting Astro Mobile W4 model to W9. Possible?

Is it possible to convert an Astro Spectra from one model control head to another, similar to changing out the MLM board in the Spectra's? What in the radio determines what model the radio will be (W4-W7, etc.)?

The codeplug determines the type of control head for the radio. Buttons and display types are based on this. However you could put a W9 on it, but you'll still have 7 characters displayed. I've tried this, but I don't remember whether all the buttons mapped over from the W7 to W9. It's even worse when going from a W4 to W9. The proper way to do it would be to have the radio reflashed with a codeplug for w9. That will be rather expensive.
