Batboard Search...

Post by kb0nly »

When are they going to fix the search on here??

I've been off here most of the year, just to busy, but lately i got some time to participate again. And i see the darn search still doesnt work, tried searching for some stuff and it spits back that it can't search for a common term and so instead of searching for Motorola Spectra MPL, it comes up with MPL... Man that sucks.

Anyway, i found the info i needed on another website.

"They"... that would be the paid, full-time support staff, right? Perhaps you forget this board is run by volunteers, in a donated facility, and provided for free to users like you. We all have lives outside the board.

Alex has already posted tips for getting the most out of the search on-board, or using Google.

If you want to do some research and suggest a possible solution to the problem rather than simply grousing about it, I'm sure Alex and Peter would be happy to listen to you.

As TVSJR said - which "THEY". You can fill out complaint forms at www.phpbb.com since that's the way the search engine here works. IF you have suggestions on how to fix them, I'm more than willing to listen to suggestions or ideas, but code or other examples of "fixes" for this long time problem are always more than welcome and carry more weight.

I tried the suggested search methods, still couldn't find the posts that i knew were on here. Finally searched by author and i came across another website that had some copy and pasted info from the batboard threads i was looking for. Google doesn't seem to find everything on the site either, and i know its there but i just dont want to go through 30 pages of posts to find it.

I was more or less asking if/when it would be made to work better rather than just complaining.

Didn't the PHPBB guys fix it yet? I'm glad our club stuck with the older version, that search engine works perfectly yet. I thought there was a way to disable the feature that removes common words/phrases?

Umm, i can't find it with the search, but i remember earlier this year someone on here posted some info how he worked around it on his forum. Can anyone find that??

That would be the "Using the Search feature" post stickied at the top of every single forum.

Funny, your first post sure looked like complaining to me. If you'd care to suggest a substantive fix (rather than just "when's it gonna get fixed?" and "I'm sure glad we stayed with the old stuff"), we might be able to get the issue resolved.

Of course, everyone fails to notice the lack of spam (and Shaun) since the new software version went online, the new management options, moderation abilities, etc.

No, not the notice about how to use the new search. Earlier this year a guy posted about how they modified the code or something to make the new search work without removing common terms on his forum.. Wish i could find that post or remember the author.

Lack of spam? You mean since updating the board or? Because we are running an older version and have no problem with spam.

http://www.google.com
Query + site:batboard.batlabs.com

i.e.

"Spectra MPL site:batboard.batlabs.com"

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Sp ... h&aq=f&oq=

Ironically, this thread currently comes up at the top of the results LOL

what would be cool is if we could get the google search to replace the board's internal search. will help out on server resources i'm sure and will produce MUCH better search results for all. i use google fulltime to search on here, the phpbb search tool is just worthless.

I will see what I can do during the upcoming holiday.

I've seen a few forums that use Google to search them, not sure how complicated it is to setup to make it seemless like some have though. But it definitely blows away the PHPBB search in any version.

Would be cool...

Should be as simple as embedding the Google search within the HTML templates.
