I did notice that it only talks about digital in the literature... I'm guessing that this little radio can't do analog?

FM and DMR are clearly mentioned in the specs:

"The XPR 5000 Series is a fully-featured analog and digital mobile radio family that transforms the enterprise by delivering exceptional voice and data..."

Sorry I wasn't specific... Yes you're right the XPR 5000 series can do analog. I was referring to the SL7550 that doesn't look like it can do analog.

The SL Series does not support GPS, but it does support Basic & Enhanced Privacy.

Some key features:

1000 channel capacity
2 watt transmit
UHF only (403-470MHz)

And here is going to be the deal breaker for a lot of people: Per the catalog, analog conventional is not supported

Based on the pricing on the SL-Series, quite frankly they are off the rocker on that radio. Seriously a $1000 List / $700 Street.

Here me out on this.

How much technology is in this radio?
2 watt RF?
a $25 cell phone battery BT60/BT90?
a single mode digital radio?
sure it has a color display, but doesn't your cell phone? How much does that really cost?
I know the radio is tough and all, dropping ball bearings on it and putting it under a sprinkler. But real world life expectancy for commercial clients is likely 5 years. How often do you swap out your cell phone?

Now I hate to use the "cell phone" comparison, but the first few clients I have shown this product to that's the first thing they mention. Many of our hospitality clients balk on $250 radio, and literally choke when you pitch a $500 radio. This market simply does not have the funds to equip every housekeeper and janitor with a $800 radio. Not enough Peabody Hotels around to support this radio.

This SL-Series would have been an out of the park home run if street priced in the $400 range. Everyone makes money.

Again, just my $.02 - Craig

the above views are my personal, not of my company. This is the "business" case for the radio, not the amateur radio scenarios. The ham guys will start seeing these later this year on eBay when they start getting lifted from various hotels maid carts.

Here in the UK we are loking at 525 GBP, which for us is the same price as a DP3601 (GPS enabled).

I really like the style and appearance of the radio and think it will do well in the executive market in the UK. A large percentage of TRBO users in the UK are made up of what we call 'shopwatch schemes'. These schemes provide a radio link for shops/stores in towns and cities connecting them to the CCTV control room and all of the other stores on the scheme to share intelligence on local shoplifters etc... I cannot see many schemes using this radio, maybe the scheme managers, but certainly not the general user.

As per other peoples concerns the 2 watt output is a worry, but with a well designed infrastructure I cant see this being an issue. DMO/back-to-back could be interesting, but from the dealers I have spoken to in the UK they are reporting good DMO coverage all things considered.

Again not having analogue is an issue, however over here I don't know of more than half a dozen mixed mode systems- even those are half way through the change over, so in reality its not a massive issue (in my opinion).

I think only time will tell, but i beleive this will be a well welcomed addition to the TRBO series over here!

We just received our radios today and will be testing them extensively on Monday. Initial impressions are that these units are amazing. There are a couple of bugs, but that may be just from lack of understanding of some of the features.

We receive our demo kit the day before yesterday. I haven't had much time to play around with them yet, but so far, I'm impressed.

As to the cost, yes, they're not 'cheap'. But, we have hotels where we've sold EX500's, because the management (the 'suits') didn't want to carry a larger portable (even like the CP200's, which are used by maintenance and housekeeping in these same hotels). The price of the SL is in line with the EX-series radios, so I don't see a problem with this. Sure, some end users don't want to spend more than $250 on any 'two-way radio', but that's because two-way radio has become a 'commodity', and they compare all "two-way radios" to cheap FRS radios at Wal-Mart. MOTOTRBO is not just a 'two-way radio'. End users who understand that, and who want to take advantage of the 'extended' capabilities of MOTOTRBO, are willing to pay more to get more than just a "two-way radio system".

No problem... a few more things .. normal 5v USB will not charge. Motorola chager is doing something to the data pins I think. FPP is kinda useless - no way to enter frequency. Might have settings wrong but don't think so.
Also every-time a call is received the display back-light turns on. good to see whos talking, but should be able to deactivate to save battery.

FPP - EVERYTHING BUT FREQUENCY. not sure why, bug or by design

Re: New Thin Trbo Prep

Posted: Mon Mar 05, 2012 3:37 pm
by Tom in D.C.
No FPP by design, as related to changing frequency, due to FCC restrictions on Part 90 radios for non-Federal use. Been in effect for many years.

from the CPS help - maybe it was an option and was removed - not sure

Mode (Front Panel Programming)
Configures the level of access for the Front Panel Programming (FPP) operation. The FPP feature lets the user change certain codeplug settings directly from the radio when not having a CPS, e.g. when the user is on the field.

Options
Disabled The FPP feature is disabled.
User The user can access codeplug parameters categorized as "Unprotected" like tone settings.
Dealer The user can access codeplug parameters categorized as “Unprotected" like tone settings as well as "Protected" like frequencies.

Got mine on the 7th. Has anyone found a micro USB mobile charger that works? Non Motorola stuff gives an on screen error that the charger is not compatible. I ordered a couple of BT90's and a separate charger from Amazon.

It has something to do with the current. An iPad charger worked on charging the SL7550.

Interesting... I'll try again this afternoon with my iPad charger and see. I used the programming cable to connect the radio to the charger so that may have been something Motorola did special.

Ok we did an experiment today using a Jawbone USB charger and used a "Realtek" adapter kit to go to micro USB. It charged the radio no problem.

I got my SL4000 yesterday... FPP is also locked down here in the UK (EMEA), not quite sure why we have been 'locked down', but even using the 'dealer' setting I can only access as already described and nothing more.

Hmmm, so I get my first SL-7550. Take it out of the box, install the battery and drop it in the bank charger. The charger light flashes green, then nothing. Pull the radio out and drop it in again. A flash of green, then nothing.

Turns out (after reading the book) that if you put a radio with a battery that's not discharged, there is no indication on the charger (besides the momentary flash of green). The charger has a legend that shows charging as red, flashing green as almost charged, solid green as charged.

The radio does have a charge level indicator on the display, but a typical radio user generally glances at the charger to see if the light is green.

Now, if you put just the battery in the charger, it does go red and indicates that the battery is charging.

So what does a customer think when he puts his radios in the charger and the charger doesn't light.

I'm confused

Bank Charger???!!! pics plz?
Is the radio ON when you drop it in the charger? if so maybe its only designed to charge the battery when the radio is off to extened the life??
If the radio is OFF - and it still does not light up sounds like a bug.

i ended getting this charger
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003XO ... 00_details
and these batteries
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002N8 ... 00_details
5 batteries and a charger all for 27$ !! :D if it was a 6550 that would be $$$$$$
