Why are there so many surplus XTL2500/5000 800MHz radios?

I'm wondering why there are so many surplus 800MHz XTL radios for sale?
Where are all the 800MHz users migrating? Or are they just buying new multi band APX radios?

Because we all got free units during rebanding, then transitioned to APX's?

Maybe because of out of production for a few years and support ending in a few. Probably most if not all of those models in PS or Govt. Service in the US so surplusing now because of "upgrades" like migration to Phase 2. Spectragod's response is spot on too....

Are most public service/government service radios on 800MHz?
There are lots of surplus 800MHz "Q" radios but far fewer surplus VHF "K" and UHF "R" radios

With regards to ASTRO25 radios, Q is 380-470 MHz. Did you mean U?

I presume "Q" is 403 - 437 MHz?

Not with ASTRO25. Q is 380-470 MHz and S is 450-512 MHz.

And since Motorola ceased the ability to order flash upgrades for the 5000's and A model 2500's, there is no legal way for them to update the flashcode to even do P25 FDMA trunking and conventional P25, so off to surplus they go!

What's an "A model" XTL2500?
Is it an early version of the M5 head?
I understand that the XTL5000, 2500, 1500 bodies are all identical apart from the flash code.
Can you still officially update some XTL2500 firmware versions?
It seems illogical to stop providing firmware updates as it costs "nothing" to produce additional copies!!!
Although I guess it forces the purchase of a new $5K radio !!
So the only way to now update the firmware on an XTL5000 is using the dirty method?

Same reason why there are so many AstroTAC 9600 units on Ebay for cheap... the first generation of Astro25 systems are reaching EOL and as they are replaced the agencies usually upgrade subscribers as well. Plus, XTLs don't support Phase II.
