Re: How do I install Saber 07.01.00 onto my newly set up DOS-only laptop?
Jim, It's an old Zenith Z-Noteflex 486/50 laptop. I have successfully used it to program Sabers, MaxTracs, GP300s, and Spectras. What I wanted to do was make it exclusively DOS with only RSS on it. What it all comes down to is reeducating myself about working with DOS. I used the <MD MRSS> command, ...

How do I install Saber 07.01.00 onto my newly set up DOS-only laptop?
Here I am, all proud of myself for wiping an old Windows 3.11 laptop and making it what I hope will be my old, slow DOS-only RSS programming machine, and BOOM! Right into the wall. I am trying to install my various RSS examples and am having no luck. RSS floppy in the A drive, A:\>INSTALL Bad comman...

Re: TMN6054A used with an Icom IC-745?
It only took 2 years of deep concentration but I finally did my TMN6054A MICOR to Icom IC-745 (and IC- 718) mic conversion! It seems to work pretty well. I could not have done this without the assistance of board member Will. I used his above instructions and it worked on the first try. I was a litt...

NMN6243B RSM ok to use on a VHF XTS3000?
Is it okay to use this combo RSM (that has provision for an antenna) and HT? I'm only asking because unterminated antenna ports make me nervous - I don't want to blow out my finals because I used the wrong mic!

Chinese Lithium Ion battery in an SVA?
So, the crappy wall wart that came with my lithium ion Saber battery finally bit the dust (shocker! ) I was wondering if it will recharge in a SVA or am I asking for a smoke and fire show?

Re: Saber alignment
Success!!! I got the hex-edited SABER.EXE file to take and can now program the lower repeater frequencies into my Sabers! Now, on a more practical note: do I program some frequencies in now at this late hour, or do I go to bed and try this again tomorrow?!? Bed sounds good, especially after taking t...

Re: Saber alignment
I attempted and achieved (what I thought was) success using the hex-edit method of expanding the frequency range of my Saber. I followed the directions to the letter. I am a bit stuck now, not being all that DOS-capable. I am unsure as to how I get the edited SABER.EXE file back in with the other fi...

Re: Saber alignment
I had to ask the venerable Scott/KB0NLY for some clarification on the settings of the Hex Editor. I think I might forgo some sleep and dig into it tonight. I will advise my successes/failures... Stay tuned, kids!

Re: Saber alignment
Wise words, Mike! That is, indeed, what got me into most of the mess I'm in (I haphazardly struck keys first and asked questions later)! Aside from fixing those mistakes, I want to ensure that my radios are working as well as they can be, that everything is set up correctly, that I am not transmitti...

Saber alignment
I have a pile of Sabers, some of which I hosed up quite badly and, as a consequence, now need to be aligned. I have unlimited access to an R2600C HS service monitor. I do not have the RTK-4203 cable. My question is, do I absolutely need the official programming cable, or can I set things up with my ...

Re: Making a 148-174 Saber II work on 2 meters
I am probably going to take the leap and hex edit to get my Saber to work from 144 on up but (and I'm thinking, if it's this easy, there is no possible way it could work) how about if I just built a new codeplug, using the 136-162 split? Since I wouldn't be going much further south of 146 (all I rea...

Re: Spectra display issues after re-cap
Resloved! Well, not really. I had a spare display board laying around that I swapped for the original and it works. I didn't notice any board damage from leaky caps on the original - maybe I put one of the replacement caps in backwards? In any case, I now have a working Spectra and am faced with the...

Spectra display issues after re-cap
So, I re-capped my VHF Spectra. Upon powering it up, I noticed that EVERY segment, every LED is lit on the display. I thought the radio was horribly destroyed by my ham-fisted soldering technique but, oddly enough, it seems to operate just fine. I just got a good audio report from a fairly distant r...

Re: TMN6054A used with an Icom IC-745?
I thank you for the reply, Will. I sort of figured that it would be more than just swapping out a connector - oh well. Maybe, if I am feeling especially idiotic, I will try to use the guts of the HM-36 together with the Motorola case and Shure element...

TMN6054A used with an Icom IC-745?
I was wondering if this is possible. One of my stock HM36 mics gave up the ghost. I have a few TMN6054As laying around doing nothing. I opened one and noticed it has a Shure element. Is it possible to rewire the end with the standard 8-pin connector and use this super cool mic with my 745?

Making a 148-174 Saber II work on 2 meters
I have a VHF Saber II that I believe was bought from a GSA auction (the front is machine engraved "HQ-AG-005", whatever that means). It's a typical Securenet Saber II with the 148-174 band split. I want to know how I can make it work on all amateur frequencies. I understand that there is a...

Re: Hams - How do you have your radios set up?
For anyone interested - however well-intentioned my original post was (and I sincerely thank everyone who took the time to reply), the most important discovery I made was that this is an impossibly subjective question. As I've continued to accumulate radios, as I've muddled through the programming p...

Yeah, cheers for that one, Jeff - I actually figured out how to dismantle my recently purchased Saber III by giving that site a good look. I like how it's set up.

Hams - How do you have your radios set up?
This isn't a cry for help so much as it is a poll of all you Motorola fellas out there who happen to have your tickets. Many of the answers (and I hope to get more than one) will be rig-dependent (i.e., ability to scan, freq range coverage, etc) but I guess what I am looking for is a philosophical a...

Re: Syntor X9000 w/XCAT?
...And, I think I just answered my own question with a 23 second long Google search that informs me that "Earlier Syntors (no X) and the Syntor X 9000 do not work with the Xcat." So, that's that!
I'll say it before someone else does.
Duh.

Syntor X9000 w/XCAT?
Another FNG question from an FNG (and I gotta zillion of 'em!) I realize that the xcat hardware/software is aimed towards the Syntor X, that the X9000 is a better deal with its 255 modes, etc. I love the idea, however, of the xcat software and being able to monkey with the settings with my Toughbook ...

It's a regular old Saber III. I do actually have an old laptop that I can use eventually. It's mostly a matter of $$$ and speed. I want a rock solid Motorola HT that I can use in a week or so on 2 meters. Not only do I need to buy a RIB and a programming cable, I need to set up the laptop and use th...

Moto Programming Service vs DIY
Greetings from a FNG who fully intends to dive in head first once I have accumulated all the necessary programming bits. I have a VHF Saber III (it has the NLD8773 PA module, which means it covers 146-174MHz. I know. I checked. Online.) who is eager to use it, I was considering using one of those ou...
