where can one find a spectra HHCH cable

Post by kb2crk »

or at least part of one. I now have a T84gxa7ha3ak spectra. i have one side of the cable but i need the end that attaches to the drawer. I can splice one together from there. the HHCH i have
is a hcn105?. i cannot read the last number on it. it does not have the round connector on the hhch side like so many i see for sale on ebay. it is a flat connector. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

I could be wrong, but I don't think the HHCH with the db15 connector will work on your Spectra. The source of most of the radios with the HHCH came from the government and used a box called a SIU (serial interface unit) to go between the HHCH and the radio. However in most of these packages, there was also a second radio. You would find a VHF T83GXA7HA9AK or something close to that and the UHF version of the same kind of radio. Then there was an encryption box, HHN4034A, that went between each radio and the SIU, YLN1120A. You may or may not have also ended up with a siren package of various models and versions.

What I did early on was to pull out the encryption boxes and make a cable to go between the radio and the SIU. Then I found out that you could replace the HHCH, SIU and the control cable with a standard Spectra control cable and put a W7 or W9 ( I just call them a series 9000 type control head) HCN1073, HCN1067, HCN1063, HCN1036 and other control heads on the Spectra and end up with an alpha numeric display and have mulit PL as well. You just need to pay attention to the EEPROM that the control head has and download a new codeplug into the radio, as well as make a few bit hacks to the radio itself.

The Spectra control heads are becoming available at very cheap prices. You should be able to obtain them for less than $10 each. If someone wants more than that, walk away. All these radios will have to be pulled out of service before January 01, 2013 no matter what. So there should be tractor trailer loads of them dirt cheap here shortly. They won't be able to even give that many away by the summer of 2012.

If you take a look at the Mike B Spectra info site, he has all the details there. I even ended up with a zone radio, so I can group my channels in zones and set up the scanning the way I want it.

thank you for the info Jim.
i was sold the radio as complete with a cut cable. apparently it was not complete if the hhch i have does not work without additional items. i will have to look into the w7 or w9 heads although i would of preferred the hhch so i could more stuff in the console i have but it would be nice to have the alpha numeric display.

If you go the route of the big alpha numeric head, you will need a different control cable between the radio and the head. You can find these in a number of places for about $20 or less. Again, I wouldn't go for a high priced cable as these will become available by the truck load shortly.

As a side note, there are a bunch of rear control head cables floating around that can be had for almost nothing. The only drawback to these cables is that they are missing the 2 control head power wires to allow you to turn the radio on and off with the ignition control. In the past I have converted these cables to a standard cable with the careful use of a Dremil tool. You need to take the metal clip off and then very carefully cut through the side material to get down to the place where a pin should be in the connector. Currently there is a white plug there to fill up the hole when the connector is molded. I push this plug out and insert a female DB25 crimp connector with the colored wired attached. Then I fill up the hole with some RTV and put the metal clip back on when it is dry. You need to do this on each side of the connector that plugs into the back of the control head.

I have a number of these modified control cables being used on trunk mount Spectra radios that I have.

Be careful there are two different types of HHCH Spectra radios. The T84gxa7ha3ak (A3 model) probably has an A3 type HLN6226 or HLN6229 HHCH Radio Interconnect Board with a 3080069P02 or HLN6092 remote mount HHCH cable. This interconnect board is the one with the two 25 pin connectors on it from the front of the radio drawer. The A3 interconnect board has special HHCH wiring connections and is not compatible with any other non-HHCH Spectra control head or non-HHCH cable. There is also special jumpering on the command board for the A3 HHCH models and other differences:

http://www.onfreq.com/syntorx/spectra/p ... tml#sprcab

I would expect a T84gxa7ha9ak (A9 model) to be able to use a SIU. This would have HLN6123 or HLN6227 Radio Interconnect Board that is compatible with the A9 or SIU. This radio could use any remote mount head or cable except a HHCH head or cable. The SIU HHCH connector has a the older pre-Spectra round type connector for the HHCH with HHCH wiring and connections. The SIU radio connector is compatible with A9 wiring and connections. So, it is the SIU that takes care of the HHCH wiring to A9 radio drawer conversion.

In the Spectra, only the SIU cable uses the older HHCH round connector. The Spectra A3 HHCH uses a DB-25 connector. Your control head part number is probably a HCN1053. Your A3 control head with the DB-25 connector would plug right into an A3 dash mount. However, the dash mount has the radio drawer rear DB-15 connector. Your high power remote mount has no rear connector and has this DB-15 connector on the remote mount cable, that is cut up and now missing.

If you have a real A3 radio it is much easier to use it with a HHCH. The conversion from an A3 to an A9 radio drawer is not simple. Only use a HHCH A3 radio drawer with a HHCH head and HHCH cable (the radio drawer connector/cable wiring between an A3 and A9 is very different).

Thank you for more great info. I have the HHCH end of the cable which does have the DB-15 connector hanging off the DB-25. what i am missing is the db-25 to the drawer. the cable is about 3 feet long from the HHCH end. I was hoping to use the HHCH in the van and the 110 w spectra should be an improvement over the 40 w maxtrac i currently use. I would love to find a cable intact but i can and will try to make one up if i need to. I have had one person tell me that it is the hln6092a cable that i need.

If your A3 head is the HCN1053 with a DB-25 pin connector, this should plug into the DB-25 connector on your cable end. Then you plug into the cable end DB-15 with an accessory connector that has the ignition wire, the emergency jumper wiring, the two pin speaker connector and the microphone hang-up box wire. Except for the hang-up box wire, this special DB-15 accessory connector that plugs into your cable end DB-15, is pretty much the same accessory as the commonly available 3080091M01 low/medium power radio rear DB-15 connector accessory. This accessory connector has the special 2 pin speaker connector for the HSN4018 or HSN6001 speaker.
http://www.onfreq.com/syntorx/spectra/c ... ml#accj2j3
The common setup HHCH wiring difference is J3 Control Head Cable Pin Description for pin 3 is not VIP Out 2, instead it is actually pin 3 hang-up box wire for the HHCH.

If the 3 feet of cable is long enough you could put your own DB-25 connector on the cut end and plug this into the radio drawer. Sorry, I never got the full wiring information for this cable. Your custom DB-25 connector would probably not be as mechanically sound or as water resistant as the Motorola factory cable. If 3 feet is too short for where you mount the radio you could make your own patch cable with a DB-25 radio connector (for the radio drawer) cable and splice it to the cut cable end, but this would be kind of ugly.

Best of all would be if you can locate a complete factory 8 foot 3080069P02 cable or a 17 foot HLN6092 cable. As long as 8 feet is long enough it does not matter which cable you get.

i could easily use an 8 foot cable as everything is going in a dodge caravan and the drawer will most likely be going behind the drivers seat. it will be joining a vhf hi and a low maratrac.
between the seats will be a havis consolidator console with multiple maxtracs and a mocat,
the hhch would hang on the side of the console with the other mics.
