Noticed the FW download also included the Flashport manual. It references iButton/Flashkey. Are the days of free FW upgrades over?

Here it comes....

Important Notes:
Abstract: FCC Narrowband mandate supported
System Platforms Affected: UHF and VHF
Special Configurations: N/A
Description: Beginning January 1, 2011 the Federal Communications Commission will
no longer accept applications for new wideband 25 KHz operations, or modifications
of existing wideband 25 KHz stations that expands the authorized interference
contour (19 dBu VHF, 21 dBu UHF). Per the Federal Communications Commission (FCC),
this software will not allow the programming of the radio to operate on 25 KHz
channel spacing for the impacted frequencies. This Customer Programming Software
is intended for programming radios to be used in the United States of America (USA)
to ensure compliance with the VHF and UHF narrowband mandate issued by the FCC.

Guys here have mentioned that your APX has to have a certain feature present in the flashcode (Q507) to be affected by this - luckily, mine doesn't!

One observation.. After upgrading to R6, my APX-7000 display font slightly changed. Or maybe it's just my imagination?

No, it changed. And the new font is UGLY. Much harder to read, odd spacing issues, etc.

Hey Moto - put it back!

I'm personally not going to read very much into the inclusion of that FlashPort pdf document. First, that document was copyright 2009. Second, it doesn't mention anything about regular firmware uplifts. It simply documents the process of using an iButton upgrade the FlashPort options in the radio. I'm guessing it was included in error.

And yes, I agree with you tvsjr - I'm not a fan of the font change either. The new font is pretty rough around the edges.

Cheers,
SD.

I'll live with the font change in lieu of the added features (for now). I'm also happy that Jeff is sending mine back this afternoon (got a close friend that is dying to see it in action with the 4104A RSM).

The FW bump went fine for me. I have to agree with most, the font change is a bummer.

Ditto, I don't like it either but oh well. I wish there was an option to choose whether to do the secure portion. Re-loading the keys after a FW bump is a pain in the a$$!

This was also mentioned when flash upgrading Astro25 radios to R16.00.00. A message comes up regarding that, but the message specifically states it will not affect frequencies in the marine radio service, MURS, Amateur Radio Service or weather service.

Got my 7000 back today - no complaints at all about the new font. It somewhat reminds me of the micro-pixel fonts that Uniden uses on the 396XT/996XT.

Unfortunately, even though Moto added more zone/channel capacity, they didn't make the software any faster. Trying to do much of anything on a 75-zone, 1300 channel codeplug takes forever - and that's on a Core i7 quad-core 1.73GHz box with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD! It takes about 3 minutes to simply load the codeplug.

Ahh, reminds me of the MTSX days... "validating codeplug data"...
