Converting an XTL 1500 to a XTL 2500

Post by sligtelyn »

I have a 800 MHz remote mount XTL 2500, If I was to dig up a VHF XTL 1500 can I convert it to a remote mount VHF XTL 2500?

To answer the question a different way, I don't see why you couldn't just order the new options on a FLASHkey from Motorola to upgrade the radio to a 2500 (or even a 5000), then swap out the hardware?

I have no idea how much it would cost but I'm guessing you might want to be sitting down when you ask!

I kinda thought I would need the lab software. Oh well. I gave up on the idea and just brought a VHF xtl2500. Now the fun begins with building new cp data.

There ARE people out there doing this. It is NOT supported by Motorola. I don't have a clue who or where, but I have seen the results.

I am suspecting that there is lab software 'in the wild', as others have said, good luck!

Actually you can order model upgrades through Motorola. They have a spreadsheet for it.

I don't think they are doing model number upgrades for radios. Just for Minitor pagers. You could call post sales support to confirm but I think it's pagers only.

Found the paperwork to do model 1 2 or 3 upgrades on portables. Still looking for the other stuff.

I am pretty sure at one time I saw such a document.

Only model # upgrades that I have seen on a flashkey has been for an Sprint provided XTL/XTS radios that were locked down to be like the MTS/MCS line.
Motorola will sell a key to upgrade it to the standard features that does change the model number, but only in the same platform (1500, 2500, etc.)

Here is a copy of the instructions from Motorola (FLASHport Software
User Guide that comes with the firmware files) on upgrading model types, so I would assume the support it.

"Upgrading Your Radio

Section B: Preparing for an Upgrade Across
Different Model Types

Note: For clarity, the steps below use an example upgrade from
an XTL 1500 to an XTL 2500.

1. Remove the XTL 1500 control head screws from the brick.

2. Carefully pry the control head cowling from the brick.
Extra care is required so as not to damage the TIB connection.

3. Carefully ease the TIB connection from the brick.

4. Connect the XTL 2500 cowling if it has not already been
connected

5. Align the brick with the control head so that the pins on the
TIB and the connections on the transceiver line up.

6. Ease the pins of the TIB connection into the brick. This will
only fit one way.

7. Snap the XTL 2500 cowling securely over the brick.

8. Secure the control head to the brick with the screws used for
the XTL 1500.

9. Power the radio on. The display should read “CH
Mismatch”.

10. Connect the GCAI cable to the front of the control head and
the other end to either the preferred serial port or USB, if
supported.

11. Be sure to connect the proper FLASHkey to the parallel port
which will support the model upgrade.

Continue with steps in Section C. "

I found it once on MOL and sent the spreadsheet to Jason awhile back (March/April?). It was similar to the one thats on there now that the excel file will calculate pricing for different options for fielded radios. I am trying to find my copy. It had things in there from upgrading APX7k to bluetooth to upgrading a HT750 or 1250 to a keypad model.

I don't recall there being any restrictions, so who knows if that was suppose to be in the wild or not.

The current spreadsheet does have options for say the XTS1500 to be uprgraded from a Model 1 to a model 2 ($675 for parts and labor) or 3 ($999 parts and labor) or 2 to 3 for $474, but nothing about from a 1500 to a 2500 etc.
