Looking for a TOUGH radio
I have a school district I do some consulting work for. They have a Special Needs student that has been destroying some radios. They're looking for something indestructible yet around $150-$200. Anyone have any suggestions? Vertex??

I should have mentioned that...UHF mostly simplex with a repeater.

How about a $20 DN HT1000?
Double-edged sword here though. Most durable radios are bricks, which could also be a heavy projectile in this case.

MT 500 I had one that burned inside a Converta-com in a car fire. Used a crow bar to pry it out of the CVC. Wiped off some of the black char, turned it on and viola it worked!

Kilgore: Smell that? You smell that?
Lance: What?
Kilgore: Napalm, son. Nothing in the world smells like that.
Kilgore: I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end...

Harris P7100. A seller out of Phoenix has a batch of ex-Arizona DPS UHF radios on Ebay for $49 each. And as an added bonus you can encrypt the school with AEGIS and drive the local scannerheads nuts.

Thanks for the suggestions...I'll let you know what we end up using and if it works.

This is sort of tongue in cheek.

Re: Looking for a TOUGH radio
My opinion would opt for the WARIS (HT600, P200, MT100) radios would be my first choice, then non-keypad JEDI as a second. Sabers since they are slimmer than the others have a weak point on the battery slide which can snap off

If anyone has ever disassembled these radios they'd find out there not much more rugged than a calculator. The soldier joints are extremely crap and the the most rugged thing about it, is that is uses metal screws to attach the front cover, thqats about it. In fact your more likely to rip off the speaker wire from the board on a simple disassembly. They literally look like a child assembled it in some sweatshop .Mine had solder all over the area in a mess where the speaker wires attached
