Can I get a 173 license?

So if you guys remember a while back about the issues with the vehicle repeaters, now I am starting to work on the officers cars and their worse then the fire. They are using 1601 filters that require 5 mhz seperation and their tuned to 158.805 rendering most of the public safety useless. I have suggested they get another license up for 173 mhz area so that their far enough away so they can talk to whomever and it not be affected.
Any idea if they can get a 173 frequency and if so what the cost is to get it?

IIRC The 173-MHz channels are shared with newspapers and news cooperatives such as The Associated Press. They are also used by the motion picture industry as a secondary basis
Dont think that would work well for coppers

They need to get one as high as they can as the neighboring agencies transmit into the repeater is 159 mhz... Any suggestions?

Talk with your state public safety frequency coordinator. He/she would be able to tell you what is available in your area

You may want to look at going the other way if possible, 150 - 151 area.

Wont work either as the input of the main repeater is 153.755. Both surrounding counties needed their input is around 159.070/158.945

I was able to get a 173 for vehicle repeater use. You have to pay attention to the freq ranges for some of the portable antennas and many of the 1/4 waves on public safety vehicles don't cover that range so you may have to change a few out.

Thanks Tray. Standard 1/4 wave NMO should work just have to trim it down. How much was the license?

Can't remember exactly but a simplex low watt will probably run around $350.00 ??
I used spectrumwatch dot com and filed with the UTC coordinator.

You should be able to license it on an itinerant basis, you can file it yourself on ULS, filing fees should be about $210.
