Using VRM650 data radio for voice?

Post by oh2lak »

Just out of curiosity, is it possible to use a VRM650 data radio for voice?

They are available all around quite cheap and would make a great use for voice applications too.

There is no reason that you shouldn't be able to. Just remove the "modem" control head and install a standard control head. This is what you have to do anyway for certain alignments on the radio (frequency error, etc.).

Keep in mind a majority of them are 800MHz, but they were available in other bands as well.

I was thinking about this too...as I understand, all the modem functions are in the control head of the VRM and there's nothing special about the radio otherwise as I understand...
