CVPI - Trunk Lip Mount: Coax routing?

Post by Cowboy »

Just curious what everyone prefers to do for routing coax on trunk lip mounts on CVPIs...

The majority of the installs I've ever done on the CVPI has been just a body mount in the roof or trunk lid - very few trunk lip mounts.

Any input is appreciated!

The few and far between times I have had to use lip mounts on a PI it was on the far edges of the lid and I used the hinge bracket to route it off the lid. If it was the center I routed the cable though the hole in the center of the inside brace and protected the cable on the edge of the hole with a snap bushing. Then routed it out though the hinge. I ended up cutting off the connector but it wasn't a big deal since it was the wrong connector anyway

Awesome, thanks for the input... I'm split between doing 3 on the trunk lid or 2 on the trunk lid and one on the roof... If I went that method, it would end up being 2 offset evenly from each other, 1/3rd of the width away from the edges and each other...

You're willing to drill the roof, but you want to use trunk lip mounts?

Bust out the drill and hole saw and get to work. It's a car. Unless you trade off every year, it's not going to be worth appreciably less with a few holes. I'm planning to put 6 in my Camry in the coming weeks (3 roof, 3 trunk)...

Put 2 in the trunk, but consider your spacing and leave yourself an option to add a third in the dead center if you want in the future. Put 1 in the roof, but consider your spacing to allow you to put a second antenna (in a line) or two more (triangle) should you need it. Gotta plan ahead

Currently has 4 holes already in the vehicle - lightbar offset center, center rear (would use for 902 antenna) and two slightly offset and off center to the roof one (about 2" farther back, evenly spaced from each other).

Trunk lid mounts because the vehicle is getting traded in within the next 12 months...

Antennas as follows:

VHF 3 dBd trunk lid
UHF 5 dBd trunk lid
900 Phantom roof top...

Drill the trunk. It's not going to make a lick of difference in the trade-in value.

Quarter-wave at the lower bandwidth minimum... 19" in this case.

Roger that...

Checked the predrilled holes in the roof...

Center hole is 12" away from either of the outside holes...

Outside holes are 24" away from each other but only about 10" away from the edges...

All 3 holes are in more or less a wide swept V pattern - center hole being more towards to the front of the vehicle.

What we do is drill a 1/4" hole in the inner trunk structure OUTSIDE of the rubber seal in order to keep the coax from making a little trough for rain to seep through and soak the guys trunk (been there done that saw his soggy stuff!) After you route the cable into the inner structure of the trunk lid, apply some silicone to the hole and seal it. Voila!
